West Leigh XI 2nds v Widnes Recs XI 2nds

THIS was a good test for Recs and a good pointer towards knowing how good this Widnes Recs team will progress in the First Division and there was nothing to worry about, Captain Marvel, Tony Poole and debutant Les Atherton bowled as tight as anything that has been seen so far this season.

West Leigh were 25 off 25 overs, Poole finishing with figures of 5-34-15 and the unlucky but disciplined Atherton 1-33-19, Bri Cafferty mopped up the tail and finished on 3-11-4, Galvin 25 and Farramond 22 top scored for West Leigh.

Wilkinson looked dangerous for West Leigh but a superb diving catch at deep square leg by Col Rigby off the bowling of Poole finished him off on 12.

West Leigh were all out for 116 off 46 overs, Widnes Recs were confident of reaching their target but started off badly, Les Atherton out for five and Col Rigby the same.

Jimmy Ashall just started were he left off last season and dispatched the West Leigh bowling all over the wicket.

But as he went for a big six he was caught on the deep mid-wicket boundary for 35, Jason Godwin partnered Ashall well and dug in and made a fine 23 before being bowled by Sefton again, but captain Poole and veteran Jimmy Shuffler Freeman knocked the runs off Poole 11 not out and Fluff Freeman 15 not out.

Sefton finished with figures of 4-27-14 for West Leigh, Widnes Recs 26 West Leigh 4.

Widnes Recs 120-6-39. This puts Widnes Recs in second place on 64 points from three games. Next week Recs entertain Euxton champions last season this will be a good acid test for Widnes Recs 2 XI at Liverpool Road.
