Murphy set to retire a very happy manager

BARNTON made history on Sunday when they beat closest rivals Garswood to win their third league and cup double in a row.

Record breaking Barnton snatched a 1-0 win away from home to clinch the title, making them the only team to have achieved the Green Mid Cheshire League double in three consecutive seasons.

A 55th minute goal by Richie Milne was enough to beat second place Garswood and make Barnton champions with two matches still to play.

He latched on to a David Dale through ball, slotting past Garswood 'keeper Colin Flood to keep the trophy at the club's Townfield Lane home for another season.

Manager Terry Murphy, who will retire from management at the end of the season, was delighted with the record run.

He said: "It obviously means quite a lot to me with it being my last season in charge and it feels great to clinch the double. I'm totally made up.

"But it's down to the players more than anything. All season they've done really well and thoroughly deserved it. Now the pressure's off and they'll be able to relax a bit and enjoy the games that are left."

Barnton are now hoping to take the treble in the District Cup derby between Lostock Gralam at Wincham Park on May 12.

The game could provide Lostock's only moment of joy this season as they prepare to return to Division Two after a dismal year which saw them win only two games.
