DEPUTY Prime Minister John Prescott has stepped into the row over Marbury Lane - thanks to a Comberbach resident.
John Alley, of Goosebrook Close, asked the government to hold a public inquiry into controversial plans to close the lane for good. They agreed to investigate and have already written to the county council.
"It's a piece of bureaucratic high-handedness by members of the county council who don't care about the difficulties ordinary people have," said Mr Alley.
"I think the people of Northwich have had a rough deal when you look at the number of shops affected by this."
Borough councillor Brian Jamieson welcomed the idea of a public inquiry.
He added: "The public have been involved so far but no-one seems to have taken any notice of what they have said."
County councillor Ron Carey, who wants the road to stay closed, said everything was now in the melting pot.
"It's really up to the resident if he feels he wants to make this submission and up to the department whether they want to implement it," he said.
