PLASTIC CRATES SET ALIGHT AT BAKERY

ROBERTS Bakery is counting the cost after £10,000 worth of plastic crates were set alight at the firm's Gadbrook Park base last week.

The police suspect arson after around 2,000 crates were burned into a liquid state, between 7pm and 8pm last Tuesday night.

Three fire crews went to the scene, and had the fire under control within minutes.

But the teams stayed for three hours, to make sure that the molten plastic could not cause any further damage.

The bakery's health and safety manager, Martin Marklew, said: "We are simply thankful that the fire was spotted early on, by one of our employees.

"The cost is high, and it is a set back. These crates are used in storing the bread, but also in transporting them, and sometimes our customers use them for display."

Police believe the offence was committed by a group of youths who were seen near the scene earlier that day.

Mr Marklew added: "I would remind everyone, including young people, that factories are dangerous places. I hope this will warn people that the cost is always high, and the danger to others is considerable."

Anyone with information about the offence should ring Northwich Police on 01606 48000.
