Group makes future brighter

COMMUNITY facilities in one of Warrington's most deprived areas are going from strength to strength thanks to the hard work of a dedicated action group.

The Westy Park Appeal Group was set up four years ago to improve accessibility and amenities for those using the former landfill site. Their successes so far have included a play area and planted grounds, as well as a 'teenage hang-out' paid for by BNFL.

There are now hopes that the area will be improved still further with a successful bid for ENTRUST money, cash provided by landfill taxes.

The group has put together a proposal costing more than £300,000. This will be broken down into smaller projects to be completed over the coming years. The plans include cycle tracks, walkways, improved lighting and areas for dog walkers.

Accessibility at Westy Community Centre will also be improved by the creation of an extra floor within the building. This will enable more youth and community groups to make use of the centre.

Community development officer Sue Emery says she is delighted by the work completed so far and is looking forward to a bright future.

"Everyone has campaigned really hard to make the park more accessible and to raise the money needed.

"We have had the backing of ward councillor Hans Mundry. He is very supportive and is behind us 100 per cent."
