George celebrates family's bog day

PATRIOTIC George Cox celebrated St George's Day in style by putting up a giant England flag on the side of his house, much to the amazement of passing motorists.

Our patron saint is a popular chap in the Cox household. The 73-year-old former printer and his wife Cath share their house with a Labrador and a cockatiel who are both named George!

George, of Liverpool Road, Lingley Green, says he is proud of his heritage and thinks St George's Day should be celebrated on a bigger scale.

"I'm a real Englishman," he said, "and very patriotic.

"If you go to Scotland, Ireland or Wales everyone puts flags up on their patron saint's days, but we even had trouble buying a flag.

"The only time you seen the St George's flag is at football matches."

George is especially proud of his English roots as he and his family all fought for their country.

"My father and grandfather were both soldiers and I did four years in the RAF," he said.

"I'm a member of Penketh and Sankey Royal British Legion, a life member of the RAF Association and the Burma Star Association and I'm President of the Burtonwood RAF Association."
