COLIN'S BACKLASH

SUNDAY's defeat left Viking's manager Colin Whitfield bitterly disappointed with a team he believes wanted it less than their opponents.

"It looked like they wanted it more than we did," he said of the 30-24 result, "All we needed to do was match their enthusiasm but we just fell by the wayside."

"There's a fine line between being a good side and an average side and at the moment we're an average side."

The players sit out next weekend on account of the Challenge Cup final, and Colin is contemplating changes ahead of the next game against Batley.

"Some of the players have underachieved. I can only go so long without changing it.

Colin was particularly frustrated because the defeat saw Widnes drop out of the all-important top five - albeit only on points difference.

"All I was asking for was 80 minutes commitment on a rugby field. I would like to think they're going to do a job for their team-mates and the supporters.

"But all of a sudden when the game's out the window we start playing."

He fears that away form is going to be the death-knell of Widnes' challenge

"We're getting these away-day blues again and it is just not good enough.

"The Featherstone game we could have won, the Keighley game and game. That six points and we would be top of the league."
