PLAY Tennis 99 is a national campaign to encourage everyone to pick up a tennis racquet and have a go.
Tennis facilities throughout the country are providing free access and use of courts during the week 1-8 May.
Help, encouragement and coaching will be freely available whenever possible.
Lane Tennis Club, the only tennis club in Halton Borough, located off Coroners Lane, to the north end of Birchfield Road in Widnes in joining in with Play Tennis 99.
A programme of activities is listed below and racquets and balls will be provided for those who do not have their own.
All that is required of participants is suitable footwear, flat non-marking soled sports shoes, appropriate clothing for tennis and a bundle of enthusiasm.
Members at the club have been busily preparing for the start of the Summer tennis season - preparing the courts, decorating the clubhouse and tidying up the grounds.
Matches have started.
Ladies matches were disrupted by rain on Tuesday evening and were unfinished.
Three Mens teams played on Thursday evening resulting in First Team losing to Vulcan 61/2-51/2, the Second Team losing 4-8 to Newton and the Third Team drew 6-6 with Stockton Heath 5.
At the weekend Lane beat Congleton 2-1 in a First Round match in the National AT Kearney Cup Competition.
The Gents Veterans (over 45s) were less successful in going down 1-3 to Claremont from Timperley in a Cheshire Veterans' Cup Tie.
Lane Juniors have entered the League for the first time for eight years and the teams showed promising form.
The Under 16 team scored a four sets all draw with Warrington Indoor Tennis Centre and the Under 14 team beat Penketh 8-0.
