JACKPOT! LUCKY VILLAGE BAGS £19,000 FOR GREEN

CROWTON villagers cracked open the champagne this week after winning a £19,000 Lottery grant which will help them create a Millennium Green.

The good news capped some hard work by the whole village, which voted to make the Lottery bid in February.

By the summer of 2000, Crowton will have a village green, featuring a wildlife meadow and a new pond.

Crowton Parish Council organised the bid, but the team who researched the idea says the whole village must take the credit.

David Sayers said: "The council kicked things off, but it's the terrific public response that made it possible. Crowton is one of only five sites in Cheshire to be chosen, and it's the only one in Vale Royal." The project will cost £42,000, but Mr Sayers believes the village won't have to raise more than £2,500 on its own.

"People in the village have offered their own expertise to build the green, chipping in with their materials, equipment and their time.

"So the actual amount we need to make up the total may not be all that much."

Work will begin on the project during the summer, with the garden being completed next year. The area will become a miniature nature reserve, with a new footpath opening to allow access to the nearby fields.
