Deeper waters

still producing

LYMM Angling Club has experienced mixed fortunes after enduring the weather of four seasons in one week.

Waters tend to be affected depending on their depth. Shallow waters respond to temperature change very quickly and therefore their performance can be affected rapidly, while the deeper waters respond more slowly.

The deeper waters such as Whitley Pool and Lymm Dam continue to improve. Whitley Pool is giving up some of its tench while Lymm Dam has produced some good catches, including big bream and carp, with plenty of smaller fish caught all around the water.

The netting team were out on Sunday using electro-fishing equipment to remove fish from one of the Antrobus stock pools, which were delivered to the pools on Belmont Estate.

Members wondering where to go on the first day of the season (June 16) should consider Belmont Pool as substantial stockings of silver fish have been made to replace fish lost due to cormorant predation.

Work parties continued at Whitley Pool on Sunday with the major task of the year being to tackle the ever increasing water levels.

Head water keeper Derek Ormrod has this year managed to secure a substantial donation of trees which are being planted throughout club sites. It is this sort of work, along with the placing and management of bird boxes, etc. that emphasises the club's commitment to the environment and its wildlife.

Last weekend the National Agricultural Centre at Stoneleigh, near Coventry, hosted the National Federation of Anglers annual conference.

This year the format was changed to allow guest speakers to address the conference - which included discussions on pollution and the law, angling and the press, sponsorships and the rod licence issue - to make for a relevant and interesting event.

Gaswise took first and second place honours following the final leg of the Angling Club Insurance Scheme Winter League Series, fished on the Sankey Canal at Sankey Bridges. Cheshire Angling managed a very credible third place in the competition.

Juniors are reminded that a junior match is to take place on Longbarn Pool on Sunday. The draw is scheduled for 10.30am with the match itself fished from 11am to 2pm. For further details contact Steve or Helen on 651541.
