ENTERTAINER Gordon Cooper, Warrington's own performing poet and storyteller, is still pulling in the audiences after almost 10 years in the business.
Gordon, of Snaefell Rise, Appleton, began his career after a minor stroke in 1990 meant he was unable to return to his job as a truck driver. Poetry and verse became the 66-years-old's new direction in life and his offers of readings, performances and creative workshops are snapped up as soon as he has a gap in his busy schedule.
"I really enjoy what I do. It gives me a real buzz to see the audience members are entertained.
"I can give them the chance to get away from their everyday problems and escape to a different world," he said.
Recalling the changing face of Warrington from bygone years and reflecting on characters he has encountered since the 30s, Gordon loves the entertainment circuit.
He has worked alongside the WI, NWA and Salvation Army as well as performing at many schools and colleges throughout Warrington and the surrounding area. His one-man show offers a hilarious view on northern life and has proved extremely popular.
A master in authentic story telling - Oliver Cromwell's Battle at Warrington and the Scotsman's Revenge to name but a few - Gordon attracts audiences from ages six to 96 and is clearly appreciated for the entertainment he provides.
"I feel I offer value for money whenever I perform for a group of people. When I recite verse, people can close their eyes and see pictures of what I'm talking about," he said.
Among his achievements, Gordon has worked for the Chester Gateway company, written a novel and completed more than 60 poems about Warrington life and is determined to do more.
"I have already taken bookings for the Millennium year, so I know my work is respected and used to inform others," he said.
Reflecting on his joy at performing, Gordon enjoys his work for three basic reasons. He loves meeting people and learning about their life experiences. His audiences are not staring at the television and can get involved in a happy, social atmosphere and, most importantly, it's a constructive learning process.
"I help to build up a comradeship with audiences that they wouldn't get by watching the television. It is good to see them laughing and thinking about what is going on around them," he said.
Gordon tied the knot in 1954 to Ruth and is still happily married. The couple have two married daughters and two grandchildren.
Alongside his employment as an entertainer, Gordon runs the Stockton Heath Writers' Group. It meets at 7.30pm every Thursday at the Red Lion Hotel, and all new members are welcome.
