Runcorn 0 Winsford Utd 1
UniBond Premier
A STUNNING 30-yard drive by Andy Bridge, his first goal for the Blues, clinched a maximum six-point Easter haul.
The striker picked the ball up in the Runcorn half seven minutes into the second half, with no support and two defenders ahead of him.
After pushing the ball to his right he unleashed a drive which flew into keeper Mark Morris' top right hand corner to bring a dull occasion to life.
Three minutes later, Bridge should have wrapped up the win when he was clear through but put his lob over Morris wide of the post.
Winsford could have later paid the price but the winning combination of luck and bravery stemmed the wave of desperate late Runcorn attacks.
After a first half in which both teams lacked attacking ideas, you got the impression that spectacular efforts were going to be the order of the day, and Paul McNally almost equalised when his 30-yard screamer dipped inches over the crossbar.
The closest the Linnets came to making it 1-1 was on 75 minutes, when Liam Watson, the UniBond Premier's top scorer last season, controlled the ball in the box and lifted it over John Bagnall, only to see his deft chip rebound off the woodwork.
Watson's follow-up shot, from a narrow angle, was well blocked by the athletic Blues keeper, who, along with a heroic back four, stood firm for the remainder of the game. It was his third clean sheet in successsion.
Winsford: Bagnall, Goldrick, Thelwell, Hibbert, German, Wheeler, Roberts, Thompson (sub Whittaker 75), Bridge (Jones 81), Hockenhull, Critchley.
