BEFORE finally deciding to close Marbury Lane one would have thought that the county council would h

Already the temporary visitor centre near the lift receives 30,000 visitors a year and a restored lift would attract several times that number by boat and car.

Clearly the Winnington Swing Bridge would be quite inadequate to cope with this level of extra car traffic.

Since it would be difficult or impossible to modify the Swing Bridge to take a substantial increase in traffic, perhaps it is time to consider the Chamber of Commerce's proposal to build a high level bridge up the hill towards Barnton.

This would cross the Weaver, skirt or cross the derelict Wallerscote site (35 acres of difficult brownfield land, possibly suitable for Park and Ride) and open up the northern approach to the town.

Obviously this would cost millions in addition to the millions needed for the Northwich Vision, but it would get no cheaper the longer it's left.

Until the situation clarifies, it would seem sensible to further postpone a decision on the proposal to demolish Brunner House and build a housing estate on the site in case that generated a net increase in traffic using the Swing Bridge bottleneck.
