WITH reference to the recent letters to the GUARDIAN in respect of the lights on Kingsway Bridge; I would, with the aid of this column, like to assure all interested parties that the matter of restoration, to their former glory, is in hand.
I have been, with the aid of Councillor Mike Hannon (former mayor), in constant correspondence on this matter with Mr K Millington, (Director of Technical Services) and Mr J Swales, the Highways Manager and progress is promised. Hopefully, to light up Latchford for the Millennium.
As with most things finance is the problem, Warrington had been greatly enhanced by new road infastructures and pedestrianisation. We have a New Arts Centre, the Hawthorne Centre, more Community Centres and a high concentration of activities in Schools and Groups to improve the quality of life of our town but, Budgetary Constraint places its own harness on ambition. Therefore a degree of patience is needed.
Although the 10 lamps in question are in situ, they are in a very bad state of disrepair. This is partly due to the elements of age, weather and partly vandalism.
My interest is not just as a ratepayer, but also as one who was reared under the shadow of the lights when they shone in all their glory. I am sure they will be lit again... one day.
MR GORDON R. COOPER
