I NOTICE in Helen Southworth's "Letter From The House" that much Parliamentary time and hot air has been wasted on the Right To Roam and access to the countryside.
In 50 years of walking, hiking and generally mooching about the countryside I have never found any shortage of places to go. I contend that we already have enough freedom of access.
Last week I walked from Lymm to Peckforton along lanes, footpaths, across fields, through forests without trespassing. In 28 miles of walking I did not encounter one single, solitary person.
Last September on an 80 mile hike along Offa's Dyke between Hay-On-Wye and Oswestry I met a total of 26 people, that's three per mile. Not exactly footpath rage is it?
The Government has once again yielded to pressure from minority groups such as the Ramblers' Association. Although I can understand the Ramblers' Association requiring greater freedom of access since they seem to be unable to enjoy the countryside unless they can invade it in battalion strength.
