DURING the war when I was at Burtonwood, world famous people would entertain the troops.
Bing Crosby came and sang in a hangar. I was invited and had a front view - he was on a huge pile of engine boxes as a stage.
Afterwards, in his car with the window open, I was crushed up against it and people passed me £1 and 10 shilling notes for him to autograph.
I wonder what happened to all those notes? Perhaps people were so hard up they had to spend them!
I was also invited to have a meal in the Officers' Mess with Dinah Shore and the Officer I worked with but I declined as I could never eat their strange food.
If I worked overtime and all the buses had gone, I was invited to a meal and was taken home in a jeep.
