ALEX Carter is regarded as one of the country's top young middle distance runners - but at the weeke

She finished fifth in the Under 20s girls race during Saturday's Inter Counties cross country Championships at Woolaton Park in Nottingham.

As a result Alex has been selected to represent Great Britain in the World Cross Country Championships in Belfast next month.

The Hartford runner, currently studying at Loughborough University, will attend a warm weather training camp in Italy with the British squad in preparation for the event.

But before that she will compete for Great Britain in Paris on Saturday. The four-way indoor competition will see Carter running in the 1500m against runners from the German, French and Italian Under 20 squads.

As for last weekend, a host of Mid Cheshire athletes were competing for Cheshire in the event, including Alex's brother Tom and sister Beth.

Twenty Vale Royal AC athletes were involved, plus a Halton & Frodsham duo from Northwich.

In the senior ladies 4km trial race for the World Cross-Country Championships Jane Groves was 16th in a time of 15mins 19secs.

On Sunday, Vale Royal AC's Peter Maher was ninth in the Wrexham half marathon in a time of 76mins 13secs.

Elsewhere, Weaverham High School athlete Holly French overcame terrible conditions at a track and field meeting in Colwyn Bay on Sunday to record an impressive one, two, three.

The Halton & Frodsham athlete won the Under 15s javelin with a personal best throw of 17m 59cms.

She also improved her PB in the shot, a throw of 6m 72cms putting her second. Holly completed her hat-trick by finishing third in the discus.

Hartford's Andrew Kilcross, competing as a first year Under 13, set a new PB to win the 100m in 14.9 seconds.
