Mementos to pass on

IN 1942 I was sent to do some work at a steelworks in south Wales. While there someone asked if I was related to J. W. Chester who played rugby for Warrington before the First World War. I said he was my father. This person, Mr Nicholas, played rugby with my dad and had a son, Phil, who became a good pal to me.

Twelve months ago I came across my ID card with my address in Wales so I decided to write there to see what it was like today and to query whether Phil was alive. My letter was printed in the local paper and I was informed Phil was still alive and given his phone number. Fifty years have passed and Phil gasped when he realised I was his caller but we had a good chat over our dads' playing days and he asked me if I could help him find out more about his dad.

The two dads played in the 1913 Cup Final and Phil has his father's medal from that match. He wrote to Warrington RLFC asking for memorabilia and information, especially about that final. However, they did not reply and he is bitterly disappointed as he wanted to pass the medal and information to his grandson. I, too, want to pass on my father's photograph of him wearing his County jersey to my grandson, now playing rugby at Lymm High School, so I know how he must feel. Phil is now 80 years old and is longing for find out more about his dad's playing days.
