Rules change

HOUSING chiefs want to encourage more landlords to renovate disused houses by altering the way grants are allocated.

Owners can apply for cash grants of up to £20,000 to renovate their property if they agree with the council to let the property at a set rent for five years.

At present homes must have been empty for more than 18 months before landlords can qualify for the cash.

Councillors voted to abandon the 18-month rule at Monday's Housing Services committee except for homes in renewal areas.
