Hit and run puppy rescued by good Samaritan

A GOOD Samaritan risked her own life to rescue a puppy left to die after a callous hit and run.

Sandra Gavin, of Rydal Street, Newton-le-Willows, was cycling home when she spotted a puppy crossing the busy dual carriageway near Pizza Hut, on Winwick Road, Warrington, at about 5.15pm last Friday. She hurried to its rescue when it was hit by a car and thrown into the air.

She said: "He manoeuvred the north bound carriage way but was struck by a small blue hatchback on the south bound carriageway. The driver failed to stop and left the injured pup in the busy road.

"Not one car bothered to stop and one almost ran me over whilst I tried to left the injured pup off the road."

Kind-hearted staff at the nearby Audi Car showroom came to their rescue, calling the police and providing a blanket and a drink for the injured dog. He was rushed to the Andale Veterinary Centre, Great Sankey, where staff nicknamed his George.

Veterinary nurse, Vicki Partington, said the puppy was very distressed when he came in. She said: "He was concussed, suffering from shock and had a large wound on his front leg."

He was placed on a drip overnight but had made a remarkably recovery by the morning.

"He was quite lively in the morning and we were able to stitch up his leg. He is a lovely character and he won't have any permanent injuries. He's eating like a horse and he likes pinching our chips at lunchtime."

If you have any information about the incident contact Warrington Police 652222.
