CARNIVAL SWITCHES TO SUNDAY FOR MILLENNIUM

Theme

BIDDULPH Carnival organisers have decided to change the day of the annual town celebrations in a bid to attract more families.

The carnival has been held on a Saturday, but the 1999 event on May 16 and the millennium festivities are due to be held on a Sunday.

"Sunday is more of a family day, and the police thought it was a better idea, with less traffic coming through the town centre,'' said carnival committee press officer Robert Moseley.

"This year's procession will take a theme of countries from around the world, and will be followed by a large open air concert, entertainment and fair on the playing fields."

Mr Moseley, from Carriage Drive, Biddulph, is looking for rock bands and musicians to perform at the three-hour-long concert.

Local band The Screaming Aardvarks have already agreed to play an hour-long set on the steps of Biddulph Town Hall before the procession sets off.

Any band which boasts a set of between 30 and 45 minutes is asked to ring Mr Moseley on 01782-519077.
