ORPHAN APPEAL AIMS TO SPLASH OUT FOR SUDAN

ROTARIANS are hoping to raise £10,000 to help African children orphaned by war in strife-torn Sudan.

Congleton Rotary Club is spearheading the appeal by donating £3,000 from its annual swimathon towards the costs of building a home for the orphans.

It is also hoping to win the backing of other groups in the town such as the Lions and Round Table, as well as schools and the public.

The £10,000 the club aims to raise will support the charity Hope and Homes for Children, and will pay for a home in the Sudan.

The appeal is being organised by Rotarian Ken Shuttleworth, who has scored a major coup by persuading the charity's founder to give a talk in Congleton next month.

Colonel Mark Cook was the commander of the British contingent of the United Nations forces in Croatia during the Serbo-Croat war, and witnessed first hand the suffering of many children.

He helped rebuild a home for 60 children while he was out there, and after leaving the Army set up Hope and Homes for Children with his wife, Caroline.

Col Cook is due to speak about the charity at a meeting to be held in Congleton Town Hall on February 10. Everyone is welcome and admission is free.

''We hope many other people in Congleton will want to support us, and any finished home can have the town's name on it,'' said Mr Shuttleworth
