POLICE ISSUE FRESH APPEAL FOR MOST WANTED ROBBER

STAFFORDSHIRE police have issued a new appeal for the public's help in catching the UK's most wanted armed robber.

Detectives working on Operation Tornado this week revealed new leads, which, together with a £20,000 reward, they hope will lead to his arrest and conviction.

Police believe the man has carried out 34 building society robberies and attempted robberies between December 1995 and June 1998.

The catalogue of crime includes an attempted robbery at the Congleton branch of the Nationwide in November 1996, and a robbery at the Alsager branch of the Britannia in April 1997.

For the first time police have issued details of a car often used by the man, a white Ford Sierra hatchback, similar to the Azura model produced between 1992 and 1993, which has

A wide black trim all around the vehicle

Black steel wheels, no trims

White spoiler fixed to sides of boot, with centre support and ends curved downwards

Smoked glass rear tail lights, white mirrors and bumper, sunroof

The man may be as short as 5ft 2in and no taller than 5ft 5in - well below average height for a man.

He is white, aged 45 to 55, medium build, with dark, collar length hair and bald on top.

Anyone with information should call 01785-234952 or 0800 555111.
