ON THE RAILROAD TO RECOVERY

AMERICAN football looks set for a revival in Crewe, 10 years after the Railroaders threw their last Hail Mary.

Stoke-based Staffordshire Surge are seeking refuge in South Cheshire after struggling to find sponsors and somewhere to play in the 1999 season starting in April.

Coached by Great Britain star John Wyse and with several ex-Crewe players on their books, the Surge will compete for the Division 2 title in the British American Football League.

Treasurer Mark Edwards said the club were looking to play at the Cumberland Sports Ground, the former home of the Railroaders.

"We dropped down a division last season because our organisation was lost a bit as we looked for sponsors and a pitch. But we are hoping to bounce back," he said.

"I have spoken to the chairman and outlined my ideas and he is happy to come to Crewe. Hopefully we will try and recruit some of our old players."
