Me and my shadow

COMPETITION winner Kate Bailey discovered what it was like to be a politician for a day when she shadowned Warrington North MP Helen Jones around London.

Kate of Woolston was one of hundreds of Year 11 pupils from schools across Helen's constituency who wrote a 200 word essay on why they should go on the visit.

The forward thinking 15-year-old, who is a member of the Warrington GUARDIAN's Speakout team, is planning to become a civil servant when she leaves school.

She said: "It was the first time I had been to the Houses of Parliament and it was completely different to how I imagined it.

Kate started her day in Helen's London office, then looked in on a Select Committee meeting before going round the House of Lords, the House of Commons and Westminster Hall. In the afternoon, she sat in on Prime Minister's Question Time.

"It has really made me want to go into politics," she added.

Helen said: "I very much enjoyed having Kate down for the day in the House of Commons. I hope she enjoyed it and I look forward to many more young people having the opportunity to visit and learn more about how British Democracy works."
