NATIONAL pub chain Wetherspoon is to create 20 new jobs in Congleton with the conversion of a former bank.
The company is due to spend £850,000 on redeveloping the former Nat West Bank in Swan Bank.
The grade two listed building has stood empty since June 1997, and Wetherspoon was granted a licence for the new pub by magistrates on Tuesday.
Work on converting the former town centre bank is due to start in August, and the new pub is set to open in December, creating 20 full and part-time jobs.
"The new pub will be called The Counting House, a reference to the building's former life as a bank," said Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon.
"It will be completely music free, there will be no pool tables and a third of the customer area will be non-smoking."
The Counting House will specialise in cask-conditioned beers, serving six at all times, including a regular regional beer.
