RUGBY LEAGUE READY FOR TAKE-OFF

CREWE and Nantwich Rugby League Club are celebrating after being accepted into the National Conference League.

The club, which formed last summer, will battle it out with the rest of the Northern Division for a place in the top-five play offs and the chance of a place in the prestigious Challenge Cup competition.

Clubs including Manchester, Nottingham, Derby and Chester will rival Crewe for the league title, with the finalists entered into the first round of the cup, just two matches away from the chance of a clash with Super League giants Wigan and Leeds.

Founder Phil Johnson said he was very excited about the coming season, which kicks off on May 8.

"This is an important development for rugby league in South Cheshire and the Potteries. I went to last year's final and I think if we play to our strengths and continue to recruit we should have a good season," he said.

"It's very very exciting and it's a real boost to the sport. We have made it into the conference league when others didn't, so it's an achievement just to get in."
