Builders warned about tax law changes

BUILDING workers are facing strict new tax rules.

Changes being introduced by the Government are designed to make sure contractors and sub-contractors pay the same tax as people in other professions.

Kevin Dickens, a partner in Northwich chartered accountancy firm Howard Worth and Co, explained: "The new rules are the next step in the Inland Revenue's campaign to ensure that people working within the building industry are not able to abuse the system and pay less tax than those in other working environments.

"Application forms for the new certificates began to be issued to sub-contractors before Christmas.

"This is an instance when ignoring paperwork and hoping it will go away is not an option."

Key changes under the Construction Industry Scheme will affect:

existing certificates

payment to sub-contractors

annual construction income

administration

Mr Dickens is hosting a series of free seminars on the changes.

The first will be held at the Quality Friendly Hotel in Northwich on January 26.
