Taxi fares look set to increase

TAXI fare prices could rocket by as much as 12 per cent in Middlewich under new proposals put forward by Congleton Borough Council.

This would bring the cost of hackney carriage fares in the town in line with other parts of Cheshire.

Congleton borough currently has the lowest fares in the county after it decided not to raise the amount at an annual review in September.

But it has since been pointed out that drivers in the borough have not had fares increased since July 1997 and so trade representatives have asked councillors to consider backing a new review.

The authority's environmental services committee will discuss the review on Wednesday, when it will also consider a further proposal put forward by the taxi trade to more than double the rate of fares on New Year's Eve for millennium celebrations.
