BUSBY'S FRESH START

DEAN Busby is hoping to put three disappointing seasons behind him as he looks to relaunch his career with the Wolves.

Busby was the boy wonder from the Boulevard when he joined Saints from Hull for £80,000 in 1995.

He broke into the first team straight away and starred at loose forward in Saints' centenary season Regal Trophy run, including the final defeat to Wigan.

But in Saints' first game under Shaun McRae in the 1996 Challenge Cup, Busby picked up a serious ankle injury and never really got a look in again at Knowsley Road.

The 25-year-old, out of contract at St. Helens, put pen to paper on a one-year deal with Warrington on New Year's Eve and had his first squad training session on Monday.

He told the GUARDIAN: "I have been out of the limelight but I have come to Warrington for a fresh start. I am hoping for regular football and to do well for the team. And I think the team can do well too this year."

Busby, who has not had a knee reconstruction as reported previously, had an injury free year in 1998 but was unable to break into the Saints first team too often.

He did start against Warrington though in Saints' home game which was switched to Anfield.

Two weeks after that he went to Hull on loan for four months and that is where many expected him to end up for the 1999 season.

Busby said: "It wasn't the same going back there for a second time - I wanted a fresh start."

It did Busby's confidence a world of good to play well for Wales against Emerging England in July at Widnes but then was shot down by not being selected by Hull coach Peter Walsh for four weeks.

Busby's early promise was proven in his three caps and captaincy of Great Britain under 21s in 1991 and 1992 and his two call-ups for Great Britain Academy in 1992.
