TWO police officers were taken to hospital after their car crashed as they answered a 999 call.
Police constables Graham Wareing and John Speakman were seriously injured when their vehicle was in collision with an advertising hoarding at a petrol station in Agden Brow, Lymm. The car came to a stop just yards from petrol pumps.
The driver had to be freed by firefighters using specialist hydraulic cutting equipment.
The two men were taken to Warrington Hospital suffering from head injuries. One also had a broken arm, while the other suffered a broken femur. As the Midweek went to press, they had not been discharged.
The accident happened just after midnight on Sunday.
The officers were on their way to a fire involving two caravans in Warrington Lane, Heatley, with fire crews from Stockton Heath and Birchwood. Firefighters were called from Warrington fire station to cut them free.
The caravans were in storage near the marina in Lymm. A fire brigade spokesman said the blaze is under investigation.
