INAUGURAL winners of commemorative Olympian silverware have been revealed following the conclusion of the 2017 Warrington Athletics Club Schools Cross Country League.

St Wilfrid's C of E Aided Primary School, Grappenhall, collected the Suzanne Rigg Trophy after their runners came out on top in the primary girls' competition over the three-race series which concluded in the snow at Walton Hall and Gardens on Saturday.

Rigg competed for Great Britain in the marathon at the Olympic Games in Atlanta, USA, in 1996, while Vose was the first to represent Warrington Athletics Club in the Olympics when contesting the cross country in Antwerp, Belgium, in 1920.

Great Sankey High School were the other big winners on the day and over the series, clinching five of the team prizes on offer to runners in the older age bands.

There were honours for individuals too, with Eva Karalius (Broomfields Junior School), Molly Wormald (Great Sankey High School), Erik Marshall (Lymm High School), Orla Gregory (Cardinal Newman Catholic High School) and Ewan McNab (Helsby High School) winning third successive races to clinch the overall titles.

A win on Saturday for Olivia Baker (Sir Thomas Boteler Church of England High School) earned her an overall prize too, while Jack Marwood (Ravenbank Community Primary School) and George Hill (Great Sankey High School) were round three victors.

More than 300 youngsters from schools across town braved the elements over distances of 1.4km and beyond as the curtain fell on the league.

At times heavy snow or sleet made the course heavy underfoot.
