WORK has begun on a £180,000 project that will 'transform' a 'deprived' part of town.

Brickfields Park on Orford Lane is now undergoing a renovation that will see the younger children's play area replaced and a new older children's play area created.

The scheme will also see the establishment of a new outdoor gym and a fenced dog exercise area, while existing park furniture will be repainted.

Construction work on a project that had been long in the making for Cllr Tony Higgins began on Monday, January 16, and will take roughly six weeks to complete.

The repainting of park furniture will follow in March.

Cllr Higgins, Warrington Borough Council’s executive board member for culture, community and leisure, said: “It’s been a lengthy process to get to this point – I made a promise back in 2013 to transform Brickfields Park and I really wanted to stick to it.

“I’m more than happy that Brickfields Park will be one of the best in Warrington – this is much needed in a deprived area and it will be loved and used by many.

“This is a transformation that will benefit the area and the whole of Warrington"

Cllr Higgins says that he will now turn his focus on to breathing life into the park on Oakwood Avenue in Padgate.

He added: “A lot of people have played their part and I’m really proud to see the contractor on site.

“I’d like to thank Trevor Jones, who has been an absolute stalwart of the community, and Sagheer Zaman who with the support of the neighbourhood team conducted the biggest public consultation ever for a park in Warrington.

“The support of my colleagues in Fairfield and Howley, Cllr Jean Flaherty and Cllr Peter Carey, has also been instrumental in getting this project off the ground.

“Without these people this would not have happened."
