CHARITY fun runners who signed up to a 5k race in Victoria Park are still waiting for refunds after the event was cancelled at the last minute.

The Legacy 5K event was due to take place on Sunday, June 15 but the organisers pulled the plug just days before runners were due to cross the line.

But some runners were not even aware the event had been cancelled even turned up on the Sunday to find no trace of the run.

Although some entrants had been paid out others have contacted the Warrington Guardian to say after receiving e-mails to say they would be told last week about refunds the information or money still has not arrived.

Sara Ashbrook, of Tilston Avenue, Latchford, signed up for the run with her daughter Zoe Louise.

The 42-year-old said: “We did a charity run last year for Cancer Research UK and we were looking for a run to do in Warrington and this came up. We spoke to friends and there was a group of us due to run together.

“So we paid up and got people to sponsor us then two days before we were told it was cancelled.

“I hadn’t raised much money - just £150 - but it was for the Royal Liverpool Hospital’s pancreatic research and they don’t have a high profile so any money for them is great.

“We have had to give some money back to those who sponsored us.

“It’s just upsetting and it has made me angry. It feels as though they duped people and I feel now like I have let the charity down.”

The company Legacy Events had successfully organised 5k runs at the park from 2011.

But it is understood this year they struggled to fill places.

When the Warrington Guardian contacted the company behind the run a spokesman said only that refunds were 'all in process' but would not give a date for when they would be paid.
