TEAM Lunar is a truly inspirational team.

Warrington Hospital’s home birth team, are “true health heroes for their outstanding contributions in providing personalised and compassionate care”.

Launched in January last year, Team Lunar emerged as a beacon of support when midwives were faced with travel restrictions, rendering home births unsafe.

During the pandemic, many families felt compelled to opt for hospital births due to safety concerns.

However, Team Lunar's resurgence has brought about a remarkable shift, with 300 families choosing home births in the past 12 months alone.

The dedicated team took home our Warrington Guardian Health Hero Award, sponsored by CHEC Warrington, in our recent Inspiration Awards 2024.

Highly commended in this category were Dr Lucy Hyland and Mike Shaw.

What sets Team Lunar apart is the creation of a small, supportive community among home birth teams and the mothers they assist.

They emphasise the importance of home births as a bespoke and individualised process that is tailored to meet the unique needs of each family.

To foster a sense of familiarity and trust, Team Lunar organizes monthly events for expecting mothers to connect with the entire team.

While on-call availability cannot be guaranteed, the team's dedication to building relationships ensures that mothers have a consistent point of contact throughout their journey.

The team believe it is “a privilege to be invited into people’s home” to assist with each birth.

The nomination went on: “Team Lunar's commitment to providing a personalised and empowering home birth experience has transformed the lives of numerous families.

“Their efforts have not only restored the element of choice but also created a supportive community that extends beyond the birthing process.

“Team Lunar truly embodies the spirit of health heroes, and their dedication deserves the highest recognition.”

Sarah Downie, Team Lunar team leader, said: “We have a team of seven midwives working within the community, supporting families before, during and after the birth of their baby.

“The team has been through so much and after having no home birth service during the Covid-19 pandemic, we were able to relaunch just over 12 months ago.

“We’re now being approached from women outside our catchment area who are willing to move to the area so they can receive our care.

“It’s all-round continuous care for each person, their family and the wider community.”

Sarah Nuttie, consultant midwife, said: “The work they do day in day out, night in and night out, is above and beyond of what is expected of Warrington Hospital

We could not be prouder of this team, they are making the most special times in people's lives even more amazing.”
